The Other Moss...

By Chuck Warnes

I’ve just finished reading Alan Moss’ delightful, light-hearted autobiography entitled “The Other Moss – My Life With Cars and Horses.”

E. Alan Moss (he refuses to divulge what the “E” stands for) opened a foreign car repair shop Los Angeles in the late 1940’s, and also tried his hand at a couple of import car dealerships. One such venture was his role as the West Coast distributor for Allard in the early 1950’s. The Allard Register #39 (Summer 2004) issue is largely devoted to abstracts of insightful, and often frank correspondence between Moss and Allard in The Moss Files.

Over the next few years Moss Motors segued into after-market parts sales when he published his first MG parts catalogue in 1962.  Moss Motors had become an industry leader in that field by 1977, when Al sold out to a friend and went into a semi-retirement. Many of us have had occasion to use Moss Motors’ services for our Allard and British car projects.

In this book Alan also shares his sports car racing experiences from the early 50’s, along with his role in helping to organize and officiate sports car competitions in the early days of the sport on the West Coast.

He has since moved to Sedona AZ, which has served as his base for vintage racing his 1948 MGTC that he has owned since new, along with a stint of rebuilding and racing a Morgan trike.

Alan’s closing line in this book, “Remember, it’s never too late to have a happy childhood.” is a fitting summary to a life well lived.

If you’d like buy a copy of the book you can send Al a check for check for $22. Postage is included and he would be happy to sign each one if so desired. Al’s address is below:

Allard Replacement Steel Wheels

Special thanks to Andy Picariello of the AOC for digging up an affordable replacement for Allard steel wheels. The “Gennie” style 2-piece steel wheels measure 16” x 4.5” wide and feature a 5 x 5.5” bolt circle with 2.25” back spacing (2.75" to the back of the rim). I did some digging and found that the wheels are made by Wheel Vintiques, which as it turns out are made right here in Fresno, CA! I stopped by their shop the other day and talked with Hector Moreno. Hector informed me that they sell direct and he will sell us primered wheels for $120/ea + shipping. To order, contact Hector at 559-251-6957 or email at hector@wheelvintiques.com and use part number 14-64255234. Wheel Vintiques will ship anywhere in the world.

Please note the inside diameter will need to be increased to 3-13/16" (approximately 3/8") and studs must be added to mount the original Allard hub caps. We are working on a plan to supply wheels with these modifications, but nothing has been finalized yet. In the meantime, your local machine shop should be able to make these changes for you. Thanks to David Hooper for the drawing below. Click here or the image below to download the pdf

The hub portion of the wheels are made from 7 gage steel (.175"), which is thicker than the original Allard wheels (low cost racing wheels?). They can also be balanced, whereas the original wheels could not.

PS: We are also looking into making custom Allard hub caps that can be mounted to these Gennie wheels with no studs. In the meantime, you can order their #2005 ’40 Standard Baby Moon hub cap if you don’t want to add mounting studs for traditional Allard hub caps.

Racing Videos...

A special thanks goes out to Cliff Reuter of www.Etceterini.com for aquiring the video collection of the late Suzy Dietrich and digitizing it for us all to enjoy. In this video you'll see a bunch of Allards...bonus points to anyone that will do the research and tell us who is driving what Allard. In this video, we get to see:
-1952 SCCA Giants Despair
-1952 Grand Island
-1953 Chanute AFB

Enjoy!

80 Years of the Flathead

I know we’re a tad late celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Ford Flathead (March 8, 1932), but I couldn’t pass up a chance to pay tribute to the engine that made Allards what they are. When most people think of Allards, they think of the “Cad-Allards” that were so dominant in the early 50’s. However, it was the Flathead that started the legend.

Amelia Island Auction Preview

Sorry for the late start on this, but both RM and Goodings will feature one Allard each at their auctions. As usual, please click on the links or photos below to visit the auction page for each car.

RM: Allard K2, chassis #2029
Our records indicate the car was originally intended to go to Holland, however at some point this was changed and it ended up going to R/P Motors in NYC on June 7, 1951. The original colors were intended to be blue with red interior, however this too was changed during the order process to bronze. This car was also ordered with the DeDion rear suspension (FACT: if you wanted a K2 with wire wheels, you could only get them if you ordered the DeDion option!). This car also features fender mounted spare wheels. Of the 117 K2's built, only a handfull came equipped with the DeDion/wire wheels setup and the fender mounted spares. The  car features a 331 Cadillac with a 3-speed transmission. This car is Lot #149 at RM and will be sold on Saturday March 10. The estimate is $100,000 - $125,000.

Goodings: Allard K3, chassis #3189
Our records indicate this K3 was ordered on October 24, 1952, through the Allard Motor Company of New York City. It was ordered Chrysler modifications and painted silver with green leather upholstery and a fawn-colored top. The car was delivered to Leonard D. Henry of New York City on March 18, 1953. The car features a 331 Hemi with dual carbs and a 4-speed transmission. This car is lot #8 and will be sold on Friday March 9. The estimate is $150,000 - $180,000.

Also of note, RM: 1958 AC Aceca Coupe
One of our members will be selling his AC Aceca coupe to possibly fund the aquisition of another Allard. Please help him fund his addition by considering the purchase of this unique AC. This car is lot #148 at RM and the estimate is $95,000 to $115,000.

News from the show circuit...

Hi - our Allard was awarded a big prize at the Boca Raton Concours in Boca Raton FL yesterday: the 'Spirit of the Road' trophy. It was a judges' award for the car that they most liked to take 'on the road'! See attached photos. This was a big prize as it could have been awarded to any car on the field of about 200 or so cars. Next, on to the Amelia Island Concours on March 10 and 11.

Allard Completes Mille Miglia North America

By Chuck Warnes

This past summer Dr. Martin Allard was invited to run his K3 on the inaugural Mille Miglia North America three-day rally. The route was over a broad array of scenic and challenging bi-ways on a round trip from Santa Barbara up to Stinson Beach, north of San Francisco.

Martin has owned his Cad-powered K3, chassis 3129 since 1979. The previous owner bought it new from Noel Kirk Motors in Los Angeles, and put 23,000 miles on it before knee problems forced him to park it in 1962. Despite the 17-year hibernation, Martin says the only work required was some minor tweaking to free up the stuck Lincoln Zephyr gearbox.

Allard to be Featured at the Glenmoor Gathering!

Good news! Special thanks to Allard owner Tom Kayuha for lobbying the Glenmoor Gathering Concours to select Allard as a featured marque in their fine Concours this year. The Concours will also feature Tucker cars and Early Supercharged Automobiles - in addition to the usual classes. The event will be held September 14-16 at the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio. We spoke with David Schultz, Director of the Gathering and he explained that they’re hoping to attract 25-30 Allard’s of all levels of finish. The Allards will be featured in a special class that won’t be judged, however special awards will be handed out. They are hoping to show the public a cross section of Allard’s including cars that are un-restored, race cars, and 100-point Concours cars.

In addition to the Concours, the Glenmoor Gathering features the scenic Countryside Tour through the twisting back roads of Ohio. Invited participants will receive two admission tickets for Sunday, a professional photo on engraved walnut plaque, secure trailer parking, admission for two to Afterglow Party (immediately following Sunday's Concours), souvenir program, and Concours poster. Several special activities and events will take place throughout the weekend to keep participants and their families busy. After talking with past participants Tom Kayuha and Peter Bowman, it’s clear that the Glenmoor team goes the extra mile to make their guests feel welcome.

To learn more about the Glenmoor Gathering, please visit their web site, www.glenmoorgathering.com. Once there, you can print the registration form or fill it electronically.

As you can imagine, this is a great (and affordable) opportunity for Allard owners from the Northeast to get together and enjoy their cars both on the road and on the lawn. We hope to see you there!

Rallye Monte Carlo Historique - 2012

In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Sydney Allard’s victory in the Monte Carlo Rally, an Allard once again braved the roads from Glasgow to Monte Carlo in competition. The Rallye Monte Carlo Historique (RMCH) is essentially the modern running of the same rally Sydney won 60 years ago. Typically the RMCH is limited to cars produced between 1955 and 1980, but thanks to the lobbying efforts of Allard owner and Monte Carlo resident, Alex Edmonds, the 1950 Allard P1 of AOC Captain Dave Loveys and brother Roger was granted special entry.

Allard to be Featured on Velocity Channel

If you have the Velocity HD channel, you’re probably aware that they have a number of nice car shows including Chasing Classic Cars, Autoweek, and American Icon. In addition to these interesting shows, they also have a short feature called “One of a Kind” where they feature interesting and rare cars. On February 7 at 8:00pm, they’ll debut a new episode featuring David Hans' unique, full fendered Allard J2. The car, chassis 1733 was a test bed for the Murray Body Company. The body proved quite attractive, but production obviously never took off. You can watch Velocity for the short, or you can click here to view the clip online after it’s posted.
